My Daily Routine

Routines...I never thought I would be a "routine person" because I thought that people who have routines are inflexible and can't adjust to changes well.
Now, I love me a good routine!
But let me take you back...BC...Before Children.
My husband and I were married for 5 years before welcoming our daughter in the world. We both worked full time jobs so we were never home much - only on the weekends. A lot of singles/couples live this way now and I bet you did too!
Before we had kids, we never really had a routine. Sure there was the weekday morning routine of getting ready for work but other than that, we were completely flexible. The weekends consisted of sleeping in and tidying up a bit and maybe vacuuming the house. Then if we felt like hitting the shops, we did. If we wanted to go watch a movie, we did. Go for a nice long drive, we did.
Fast forward to a few years ago when our DD came into the world. All the flexibility that we had was now out the window and we were at the service of our little one. It sounds harsh but it is true. Newborns take up a lot of time and as a mum, our sole purpose is to care for them.
Fast forward again to present day...now I have two little monkeys running around and I have that many routines happening that I can't really remember what life was like without them. Thinking back, why didn't I have a routine? Routines make everything so much easier and you know what is coming up next.
So...that being said, below is my daily routine. I hope this could be of help to you and possibly even help you be more organized and plan out your day better.
1. Get ready for the day
Whatever time you wake up, be sure to make sure you are ready and prepared for the day.
Every morning, I shower, get dressed, put on makeup and make my bed.
Having a made bed helps me feel like I'm on the right track to having a good day. I don't like walking back into my room during the day and seeing an unmade bed. I feel like my mind isn't organized and "ready" if I see an unmade bed.
Usually at around this time, my kids wake up and we eat breakfast together and then I dress them for the day and brush their teeth and then brush my teeth and then I help my kids make their beds.
2. Unload the dishwasher and tidy the kitchen
If you have read my 7 things to do before bed blog, you will know that I turn on my dishwasher every night before going to bed. So overnight, the dishes are washing and they are nice and clean for me to unload and put away the next day. Once this has been done, then I load up the dishwasher again with all the breakfast dishes. Once this is done, the I tidy up the kitchen. i.e. put away the toaster, put away all the condiments that were used and wipe down all benches.
3. Laundry
I try to put on at least one load of laundry every day. That is, I put on load in the washing machine and one load in the dryer and once that is done, I fold it and put it away. Most days, I need to do two loads of laundry, but even if I only do one load it will help keep me up to date with all the laundry.
No one likes to fold a mountain of clothes on the weekend when you are supposed to be having fun!
4. Vacuum and mop
I vacuum my floors 3 times a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Why so often you ask? It is because I have two little ones that like to eat snack and leave crumbs everywhere and also because I can't stand the feeling of dirt or crumbs underneath my feet. It is a pet peeve of mine so I like to keep my floors as clean as possible.
I also mop my floors every Monday and again during the week - if needed.
5. More laundry!
What?! More laundry?! I know...I hear you! In step three, that was basically the step where I put a load of laundry into the washing machine. This step here is folding and putting away the laundry that is already dry from the previous day.
6. Prepare dinner
At 4.30pm every day, an alarm goes off on my phone reminding me that I have to prepare for dinner. I have only been setting an alarm for this purpose in the last year or so. Reason being, I get distracted by the kids or whatever I'm doing and then I find myself in a rush trying to prep and cook dinner and have it ready by 6pm. So the way I have helped myself is by setting an alarm.
7. Kids' bedtime routine
After we have all eaten dinner and spent some time together as a family, I prepare the kids for their bedtime routine and put them to bed.
If you would like me to write a post on my kids' bedtime routine, please leave me a comment below.
8. Start prepping for the next day
This is basically the step where I do everything in my 7 things to do before bed blog.
So basically, my daily routine is not really super flashy or is anything special. But if I don't do this every day then I find that it throws out my week. May seem a bit unbelievable but it is true.
That being said, I still like to think of myself as a flexible person and I can not do this routine daily if circumstances arise where I can't do these things every day. If this happens (and it happens a lot) I just work a bit extra the next day to make sure I am on top of my laundry, floors and tidying up my house.
Whether you like routines or not, the fact is, we all have them and do them. How you get ready for work is a routine unto itself like I mentioned above. How you get ready for bed is also a routine.
Anyway, I hope this was of interest to you. Please comment below as to what else you would like me to blog about.
Talk soon xo

B
